Spring Has Sprung In South Texas

Spring Has Sprung In South Texas

Spring Has Sprung in south Texas! The weather has been cooperating nicely here and the flowers are in full bloom! Although I thought the squirrels had finished off some daffodil bulbs they did leave some to mix nicely with the irises in my front yard. The knockout roses are also blooming with my regular roses not far behind them.

Shortly before the bulbs began to bloom the azaleas were decorating the front yard. They are so pretty I wish they lasted longer than they do! My dog, Daisy, likes to decorate the front yard as well!

My backyard is where I grow my vegetables and herbs. I bought some blueberry and blackberry “bushes” (they are more like sticks) on clearance at Walmart several weeks ago to add to my edible plants.

Herbs

I grow all my herbs in containers which makes it easier to step out my back door to harvest. I currently have dill, parsley, basil, oregano, chives, thyme, rosemary and mint growing. With my limited diet these herbs are great for flavoring many recipes!

Vegetables

I recently expanded my vegetable garden area where I will be growing green beans, okra, peppers, tomatoes, onions and garlic. My kale has been growing in a pot and since we haven’t had much of a winter it seems to be a perennial! I have started several of these plants in pots to get a head start on the growing season. Unfortunately it gets too hot by mid-June for some of these plants to continue growing!

And last, but not least, is my lettuce and spinach. My lettuce growing season goes from October through May. I start one batch in October which lasts through the winter and another batch in late February which lasts through May (depending on how hot it gets!)

I hope you enjoyed the tour of my garden! What are your favorite plants to grow?

I am inspired! I do not grow any herbs or vegetables – energy too limited for a garden (think big). I have thought about container gardening – already do this with flowers. Herbs and lettuces and particularly pretty. I’m actually going to be wise and start with just a few items this year. Thank you for the pictures – your colorful front yard is gorgeous.

  2. Your yard looks beautiful! We’re starting a few vegetables and herbs, too. The seeds are just beginning to sprout. A few of my roses have bloomed, but the bushes are full of buds. Can’t wait!

  3. Hi Roseann, Lovely flowers! I had not thought of growing lettuce in containers but may give that a try as voles have ruined our backyard gardening space. Thanks for sharing! Blessings, Janet

  4. I am jealous of your weather and your garden! Spring is just starting to show up here in Utah. We have daffodils and tulips, but it is still a bit chilly to think about planting anything else quite yet. Soon, I hope! Thanks for sharing at My Busy Beehive’s #beeparty!

  5. What an absolutely beautiful garden!! Spring in Vancouver Island, Canada, has been trying hard to dominate. Hopefully our full Spring will not be far behind yours!

  6. Wonderful pictures and delightful garden. Visiting from Thurs. Favorite Things. My favorite things to grow are herbs like basil, oregano, and dill. Here in AZ we have to conserve water so we are very careful to use a drip system as not to waste a drop.

  7. Oh my, you’re way ahead of me. Will get mine planted soon. Nothing better than homegrown veggies. Thank you for sharing this post at the #WednesdayAIMLinkParty. I shared it on social media.
